Electric Cargo Bikes: Haul Kids, Groceries and Gear Without the Car
An electric cargo bike is built to carry things. The frame is longer and heavier-duty than a standard ebike, the rear rack is integrated rather than bolted on, and the motor is there so a loaded bike still rides like a bike. Most buyers are solving a specific problem: the school run, the weekly grocery trip, hauling tools to a job, or dropping a second car that mostly sits in the driveway. Our cargo ebike lineup runs from $1,399 to $2,299 and includes the AVENTON – Abound Ebike, the XPedition – Cargo eBike, the XPedition Dual-Battery Cargo eBike, the Rad Power – RadRunner 3 Plus Electric Utility Bike, the Rad Power - RadRunner 2 Electric Utility Bike, the Rad Power – RadRunner Plus, and the Rad Power – RadWagon 4 Electric Cargo Bike.
Longtail vs. Compact Utility Frames
The two shapes solve different problems. A longtail cargo bike stretches the rear triangle to create a long deck behind the saddle, which is where child seats, passenger pads and large panniers mount. The RadWagon 4 and the XPedition models follow this pattern. Compact utility frames like the RadRunner 2, RadRunner Plus and RadRunner 3 Plus keep the wheelbase shorter and the bike easier to park, store and turn around, while still giving you a real rack and a low step-through.
Pick the longtail if passengers and bulky loads are the whole point. Pick the compact frame if most of your trips are errands and you want something that handles more like a normal bike. If you are mostly commuting solo and only occasionally hauling, our commuter bikes may fit better, and riders dealing with gravel, grass or rough shoulders often look at fat tire bikes instead.
Why a Dual-Battery Option Matters
Weight is the variable people underestimate. A loaded utility electric bike asks more of the motor on every hill and every start from a stop, and that shows up as faster battery drain. The XPedition Dual-Battery Cargo eBike is for riders who load heavily, ride hilly routes, or chain several stops together. If your trips are short and flat, a single battery is usually enough; if they are long, loaded and hilly, the second battery is the difference between planning around the bike and just riding it.
Accessories and Safe Loading
Budget for the setup, not just the bike. A family electric bike is only as useful as what you bolt to it.
- Rack decks, running boards and passenger pads for the rear platform
- Panniers or cargo bags that clear the rear wheel and your heels
- Child seats matched to the specific frame and rack you own
- A heavy chain or U-lock, since a cargo bike is hard to carry indoors
- Fenders, mirrors and lighting for school-hour and after-dark trips
Load low and centered, keep weight balanced side to side, and strap everything down before you roll. A loaded bike takes longer to stop, so leave more space, brake earlier, and apply both brakes smoothly rather than grabbing the front. Take the first few loaded rides somewhere quiet. Browse parts and accessories when you are ready to outfit yours.
